the COUNTER-SNAP screws (pdf).
Recommended for boards 12 ft and under
On our decking, due to the density of the boards, you may have to pre-drill a pilot hole. It is best to test a small sample of the decking to see if the screw passes through without the head snapping before it is fully installed. If you don’t have to pre-drill, the screw will leave a small bump that can be hammered down to conceal the screw.
If you find that you must pre-drill, a 1/8th inch drill bit is the best to use. The small hole that is left after the screw is in place can be concealed by pushing the plastic pigtail back into the hole or left to expand inwards naturally.
If you should make a mistake on a deck board, the best way to remove the board is to get a pry bar and pry the board off. The screws will be sticking up from the joist. Take a set of locking pliers and reverse the screws out. The board can be used again if the board is pried off carefully.
